CULTURE AND HIV AND AIDS

THE PURPOSE
The Culture and HIV & AIDS Program works in partnership with the Museums of Malawi, a government institution with a mission to research, preserve and interpret Malawi’s cultural heritage. The purpose of the program is to address dangerous cultual beliefs and practices that promote the spread of HIV.
HOW IT WORKS

Combining the Museum’s cultural approach and Malawi Matter’s creative methods, the program provides an inclusive, interactive educational program for older primary and all secondary school students to address cultural beliefs and practices that promote the spread of HIV & AIDS. The sessions use dynamic, culturally appropriate methods that provide information on cultural practices that contribute to the spread of HIV, gender issues, discrimination and stigma, human rights issues, prevention strategies, transmission, testing and treatment.

THE RESULT

Our goal is to provide information to minimize the risk of HIV infection and improve the quality of life for affected children, youth and adults by offering:

  • VCT (testing) on site
  • ARV treatment options for people that test positive
  • Establishment of anti-AIDS groups in schools and villages
  • Strengthening partnerships among groups involved in HIV & AIDS prevention

``It has been observed that most of the parents don’t share issues on HIV and AIDS with their children due to cultural beliefs. The more training is done, the more lives we save.``
