TRAINING METHOD

THE PURPOSE

First, and most important, Malawi Matters’ training design is unique. We promote a self-sustaining “train the trainer” education program that empowers Malawians to independently train others about HIV and AIDS.

HOW IT WORKS

The activities and learning experiences are intended for youth and adults and focus on a variety of social settings—world, nation, community, school, congregation, family and self. They are flexible enough to meet various learning abilities and interests, and are guides—not lesson plans—and can be used in many contexts.

Since Malawi is essentially an oral culture, with many who are illiterate and impoverished, our program brings meaningful training at a grassroots level by:

  • designing lessons based on storytelling, music, drama, dance, and art—methods and approaches that Malawians already know and understand.

  • focusing on best practice strategies that make for effective instruction.

  • equipping key leaders from villages, schools and congregations so they can train their colleagues and groups, who then continue to pass on the lessons to others.

  • utilizing sustaining, cost-effective practices with simple supplies that do not require expensive or impractical teaching aids.

``HIV/AIDS is still a disease surrounded by ignorance, prejudice, discrimination and stigma. Training by Malawi Matters is a milestone.``
